Best AML certification in India: an honest comparison

No regulator requires a Principal Officer to hold an AML certificate. The PML Rules ask only that the Principal Officer be an officer at the management level. So pick the credential that matches your sector and teaches the Indian rulebook you will actually report under.

The short answer
  • Working for a global bank or want an internationally portable credential: ACAMS CAMS. Note it has no India regulatory module.
  • Bank staff wanting a low-cost Indian banking credential: IIBF AML & KYC certificate.
  • Securities market intermediaries: NISM CALM, from the institute set up by SEBI.
  • Chartered accountants: ICAI's AML Specialist course is the deepest on PMLA, but open to ICAI members only.
  • Principal Officers and compliance staff at any reporting entity who need the PMLA, PML Rules and FIU-IND reporting worked through end to end: a practitioner course such as dcomply Academy's AML / PMLA Practitioner.

Before you pay for any of them.

The questions that separate a credential that helps you do the job from one that only looks good on a profile.

Does it teach India's rulebook? PMLA 2002, the PML (Maintenance of Records) Rules 2005, FIU-IND reporting and your regulator's KYC directions. Global credentials teach FATF standards instead.
Is it current? RBI repealed its 2016 KYC Master Direction on 28 November 2025 and issued entity-wise KYC Directions. Course material citing the 2016 direction as current is out of date.
Does it fit your sector? Banking, securities, insurance, NBFCs and professionals such as CAs each sit under different directions. Pick a course that covers yours.
What is the full cost? Some global credentials need a paid membership on top of the exam, every year, to keep the certificate active.
Can you practise the reporting? STR drafting, transaction monitoring and CTR timelines are skills. Check whether the course has worked examples or only definitions.

The options, compared.

Where dcomply Academy fits.

We run one of the options above, so read this section with that in mind.

AML / PMLA Compliance Officer Practitioner

Written for the person whose name goes to FIU-IND as Principal Officer, and for the team behind them. It follows one reporting entity through a full compliance year. If your employer is a global bank that asks for CAMS, take that seriously; this course adds the Indian layer CAMS does not cover.

  • 12 modules and 60 lessons on PMLA 2002, the PML (Maintenance of Records) Rules 2005 and FIU-IND reporting.
  • Each legal claim in a lesson is linked to the section, rule or circular it rests on.
  • Final exam: 45 questions from a 70-item pool, 90 minutes, 75% to pass. Certificate with a public verification link.
  • Lesson 1 is open to read. The rest of Module 1 is free with your email.

Questions people actually ask.

Q 01
Does a Principal Officer need an AML certification?

No. Rule 2(1)(f) of the PML (Maintenance of Records) Rules 2005, as amended by G.S.R. 652(E) of 4 September 2023, requires only that the Principal Officer be an officer at the management level. No regulator mandates a certificate.

Q 02
Who has to be reported to FIU-IND?

Under Rule 7(1) of the PML Rules, every reporting entity must communicate the name, designation and address of both its Designated Director and its Principal Officer to the Director, FIU-IND. Banks must also send the details to RBI and cannot make the Principal Officer the Designated Director.

Q 03
Is CAMS recognised in India?

CAMS is widely known among global banks and multinationals operating in India. It teaches international standards and has no India regulatory module, so Indian staff usually pair it with PMLA-specific study.

Q 04
Is the RBI KYC Master Direction 2016 still in force?

No. RBI repealed it with immediate effect on 28 November 2025 (RBI/2025-26/101) and replaced it with KYC Directions for each type of regulated entity. Check that any course you take reflects this.

Q 05
Which is the cheapest credible option?

The IIBF AML & KYC certificate has the lowest published fee, and suits bank staff. ICAI's course is also low cost but is limited to chartered accountants.
